ALOMORA: Twelve pairs of China made shoes packed in boxes that were in the shape of the Indian tricolour were seized by the police from a footwear shop in Almora on Thursday. Each box had a label with Chinese characters on it and a line saying ‘Country of origin: China’ along with the year of import marked as ‘2017’. The seizure coming in the backdrop of taut relations between India and China over the Doklam standoff led to passions running high in the small town which is situated not far away from Pithoragarh district which shares a border with China.

Indian Flag Shoe Box “Made in China”

Bishan Singh Bora, owner of the footwear shop Bora Shoe Collection from where the shoes were seized told TOI that he had received the consignment from Tamanna Footwear, a dealer based in Rudrapur in Udham Singh Nagar district. “On seeing the design of the tricolour on the boxes, I immediately reported the matter to the police,” he said.
Almora police officials after taking the shoe boxes in their custody, lodged an FIR against Tamanna Footwear, Rudrapur, for insulting the national flag under Section 2 of Prevention of Insults to National Honour Act,1971.Police sources said that on preliminary investigation, it was found that the shoes were supplied initially to Delhi, and from there, sent to Rudrapur.

However, they added that investigations were ongoing on whether the shoes and boxes were actually manufactured in China as was claimed in the label. “At present, we can confirm that the boxes were supplied from Delhi to the Rudrapur dealer. We have requested Udham Singh Nagar police officials to investigate at their end from the dealer to ascertain the origin of these boxes,” said P Renuka Devi, senior superintendent of police, Almora.

Should the Footwear Industry of India still purchase from China after the country being insulted by them?
